Indiana College Art Competition

All college students are invited to submit original works of art for a juried competition. The theme "Captured Spirits" honors the role of the horse in contemporary culture. The competition encourages equine themed art, but is not limited to equine art only. Interpretations of the positive energy captured in expressing spirit are welcome.

Prize list includes:

  1. Gallery exhibition and reception at the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Art Gallery~ January 2010 (top 30 entries);
  2. Gallery exhibition during the Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis ~ April 2010 (selected entries)
  3. Gallery exhibition during the Scales & Tails Fest at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis ~ June 2010 (top 15 entries)
  4. Gallery exhibition for the month of July 2010 at the Athenaeum Foundation Emerging Artists Gallery ~ June 30 – July 30, 2010 (top 15 entries)
  5. Special recognition: Best of Show $100, Best 2-D $50, Best 3-D $50, 5 Honorable Mentions

Terms and Conditions

Entrants must currently be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs in Indiana.

A maximum of 1 piece per student may be submitted. All artwork must have been completed while artist was enrolled in college. 2-D and 3-D work will be accepted. 2-D work must be framed and ready to hang. Water color and drawings must be under glass or plexiglass. No 2-D work over 50" x 50" will be accepted.

Artwork must be original and not copied.

Artwork is to be documented and submitted as JPEG files. No slides or photos please. All art submitted for judging must be the actual work to be in the exhibitions. CDs will be returned only if a self-addressed stamped envelope or package with sufficient postage attached is provided. There is no entry fee.

Please include: name, college/year, contact information (include mailing address, phone and e-mail; title of artwork, media, dimensions, and date executed.

Artists’ Responsibilities

Artist is responsible for payment of all shipping related to delivery and return of pieces. Pieces accepted for exhibition will remain with the gallery exhibition coordinators from January through mid-August 2010. Artist is responsible for insuring their artwork for the duration of the exhibition. The Indiana Horse Council and Saint Mary-of- the-Woods College assume no responsibility for artwork that is damaged or lost, although every precaution will be taken to safeguard all art.

Artist must allow photography and photographic use of artwork for the purpose of promotion, documentation and use by the media, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and the Indiana Horse Council/Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo, Indiana State Museum, and Athenaeum Foundation.

Accepted Media

  • Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Electronic Media.
  • No work that is fragile, subject to damage, or requires supervision will be accepted.
  • No "wet" work.
  • Size and installation restrictions may apply for 3-D submissions that include installation and maintenance.

Work not properly prepared for exhibition will not be included in the exhibition.

Artwork may be offered for sale. If work is for sale, indicate its value. Otherwise, indicate NFS (not for sale).

All accepted artwork must remain as part of the exhibition for the duration.

Deadline for entries: November 15, 2009

Judging will take place: November 2009. Finalists will be notified: December 2009.
